Diabetes Foot Care – Protect the Piggies!

Diabetes has been known to cause damage to the blood vessels and nerves in our bodies; which, in turn, can cause us to lose feeling in areas affected by this damage – such as our feet.

Foot care is especially important for diabetics, as the lack of feeling can make it hard to tell if there is a blister or sore that can develop into something much worse. Untreated sores can become ulcers, which can become infected. Worst case scenario is that the infection becomes so severe that the foot must be amputated.

Okay, now that I have your attention, let’s talk about what you can do to prevent that worst case scenario and take care of your feet as a diabetic.

First, and foremost, is to take your medication and/or insulin as prescribed by your physician to keep your blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible. Follow that with the diet and exercise advised by your doctor as well. Keeping your body as a whole healthy will – in the long run – keep your feet healthy as well.

Secondly, wash your feet daily and dry them well, especially between the toes. Apply cream or lotion, specifically on the heels, to keep the skin from becoming cracked and susceptible to infection. Dust your feet with a non-medicated powder before putting on socks and shoes in order to keep them dry.

Thirdly, keep your feet at a normal body temperature – don’t allow them to get too hot or too cold. And avoid going barefoot whenever possible as most bacteria can be picked up from floors.

Lastly, check your feet every day, even if you have to have someone help you or use a mirror. Early detection of sores, calluses, corns, etc. can be treated easily by your doctor before they develop into a serious infection.

Everyone who suffers from diabetes or has a loved one with diabetes should have a checklist of things to do and watch with regard to foot care. From the time we are little, we are attentive to our “piggies”; so as adults, we should continue to pay attention. It would be a shame for that “piggy” to go to market and never come home.
