Hand Fungus – Athlete’s Foot of the Hand

Do you think that you might have some type of hand fungus?  Just as people can contract athlete’s foot on their feet, we can also get a skin fungus on our hands.

There are several different types of hand fungus.

Tinea Manuum is a fungal infection that is usually on the palm of the hand, and can also be in between the fingers.  It’s very similar to athlete’s foot, and is usually chronic.  Just like athlete’s foot, it’s very itchy.

Tinea Nigra is another fungal infection on the palms of the hands,  and the symptoms include non-scaly patches of deep pigmentation.  This hand fungus is not itchy.

Tinea Corporis – commonly known as ringworm, is often seen on the hands.  It can be seen in other places – I had it on my arms as a child.  It’s very contagious, and is spread easily by skin contact such as shaking hands.

If you have your hands in water often, you could be more prone to getting a hand fungus.  Getting a manicure at a shop that’s less than careful with their sterilization techniques can also spread hand fungus.

Treating hand fungus is particularly difficult.  It’s one thing to sit still soaking your feet, but soaking your hands is more of a challenge.  But don’t worry – they can still be easily treated.

Most forms of hand fungus can be easily and quickly cured, if you treat it early and correctly.  Since a hand fungus is an infection, if you don’t treat it thoroughly, it can come back.

Hand fungus can actually remain after the obvious symptoms are long gone, so it’s very important to treat it completely.

As hand fungus is so closely related to athlete’s foot, any anti-fungal cream used to treat athlete’s foot can also be used to treat a hand fungus.
