Ingrown Toenail – Cause of Toe Pain
An ingrown nail, also known as Onychocryptosis, is a familiar form of nail disease. This condition is quite painful since the nail grows into the skin. This condition is normally found on toenails. When a person has an ingrown toenail, the corner or side of the toenails usually grows into the soft flesh of the toe.
Some of the most common signs of an ingrown toenail include pain, redness and swelling on the affected area of the toe during the early stages. However, extra skin and tissue may also grow around the edge of the toe nail and a yellowish drainage may be visible. After which, an infection may build up causing the swelling to get worse.
Ingrown Toenails are commonly caused by poor nail trimming. When one cuts the nails too short, the skin on the sides of the nail may grow causing the nail to grow beneath the skin. Poorly fitted shoes are also a factor that can contribute to an ingrown nail. Footwear that is too constricted could force the skin on the sides of the nail to grow while pushing the nail to grow beneath it.
Toe injuries or engaging in activities that involves repetitive pressure to the toes, like kicking a soccer ball, can also lead to ingrown toenails. Nail deformities acquired from diseases or those that have congenital toenail malformation are also factors that result in an ingrown nail.
Most often, people with ingrown toenails prefer home medication over seeking professional help. In order to relieve the discomfort of an ingrown toenail, the infected area are soaked in warm water. Then cotton is inserted under the ingrown edge to allow the nail to grow above the skin.
Sometimes, the nail is trimmed to relieve the toe of discomfort when the nail starts to grow piercing the skin beneath it. But this method is temporary since the nail will continue to grow back. Pain relievers can also alleviate the pain of an ingrown toenail. In severe cases where infection has occurred, a doctor may choose to remove the extra skin to help the nail heal faster. A simple surgery will be performed to remove the corner of the nail along with the nail bed to prevent that area from growing back.
The best way to avoid ingrown toenails is to trim the nails properly, and avoid poorly-fitted shoes.
